Truck Insurance

Auto liability, cargo and physical damage coverage for trucks.

Truck Insurance: common questions

What insurance does an owner-operator with their own authority need?

FMCSA requires at least $750,000 in primary liability for most general freight, with higher minimums for some hazmat. Most brokers and shippers also ask for cargo insurance (often $100,000) and many carriers add physical damage coverage.

How does my insurance get filed with FMCSA?

Your insurance company files proof of liability coverage (form BMC-91 or BMC-91X) with FMCSA. Your operating authority can't become active until that filing is on record.
