MC Authority Setup

Apply for and activate your motor carrier (MC) operating authority.

MC Authority Setup: common questions

How do I get my own trucking authority?

Register with FMCSA through its online registration system to get a USDOT number and apply for interstate operating authority. Your authority only becomes active after your liability insurance filing and BOC-3 process agent filing are on file with FMCSA and the protest period has passed, which usually takes a few weeks.

What do I need before my authority goes active?

Most new for-hire carriers need a USDOT number, an operating authority application, a BOC-3 filing from a process agent, and proof of liability insurance filed by their insurer with FMCSA. Many also set up an LLC, an EIN, IRP plates and IFTA before running interstate loads.
