What is Factoring? The Owner-Operator’s Guide to Instant Cash Flow
In the trucking industry, "Cash is King." However, most brokers and shippers take 30, 60, or even 90 days to pay a load invoice. For an owner-operator with immediate fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs, waiting three months for payment isn't an option.
Factoring is a financial transaction where you sell your unpaid invoices to a factoring company in exchange for immediate cash. It bridges the gap between delivering a load and getting paid by the broker.
1. How Factoring Works
- Deliver the Load: You complete the delivery and get the Bill of Lading (BOL) signed.
- Sell the Invoice: You send the invoice and BOL to the factoring company instead of the broker.
- Get Paid: The factoring company advances you 95% to 99% of the invoice value within 24 hours.
- Broker Pays Factor: The broker pays the factoring company directly on their original net-30 or net-60 terms.
- Rebate: Once the factor is paid, they send you the remaining balance minus their service fee.
2. Recourse vs. Non-Recourse Factoring
Choosing the right partner depends on your risk tolerance:
- Recourse Factoring: If the broker fails to pay the invoice (due to bankruptcy or other issues), you are responsible for buying that invoice back from the factor.
- Non-Recourse Factoring: The factoring company takes the credit risk. If the broker doesn't pay for credit-related reasons, the factor absorbs the loss. This is safer for new carriers.
3. Compliance and Authority Requirements
Before you can factor your first load, you must have your legal paperwork in order. Factoring companies will verify your:
- MC Number: This is your legal "permission slip" to get paid for hauling cargo. Ensure your Operating Authority is active.
- DOT Number: This tracks your safety performance and "fingerprints" your business for federal regulators. Check our DOT Number Guide to stay compliant with FMCSA standards.
- Business Identity: You must provide your EIN Number and current UCR Registration status.
- Administrative Filings: Verification of your BOC-3 Filing and current COI (Certificate of Insurance) is standard.
